How to Stay Safe and Warm While Running in the Cold
As much as we all love summer runs, there’s something about a winter run that just feels extra exhilarating — but also extra dangerous. After all, when temperatures dip below freezing, there’s a greater risk of slips and falls, not to mention frostbite and hypothermia. So how can you enjoy your winter run while staying safe and warm? Here are a few tips.
Dress in Layers
One of the most important things you can do to stay safe and warm while running in the cold is to dress in layers. This will help you regulate your body temperature more effectively and prevent overheating (and subsequent chills) as you work up a sweat. Start with a base layer of moisture-wicking fabric, then add a layer or two of insulation (such as fleece or wool), followed by a waterproof outer layer.
Protect your extremities
Your extremities — hands, feet, ears, and nose — are most susceptible to frostbite, so it’s important to take extra care of them when running in the cold.
